Premium grade New Zealand pine mesh bottom. The mesh is made of stainless steel. Then you have a corrugated plastic insert that can be closed up for the cold in winter and opened for added ventilation during summer. We personally use these on our hives and when the temperature gets above 30 degrees, you begin to appreciate the ventilation these bottoms provide compared to closed bottoms. Bees generally beard on the front of the box fanning their wings trying to regulate the temperature in the hive using valuable honey stores and effort attempting to cool the hive down. When you have this bottom open it is business as usual and bees are out collecting pollen and nectar rather than using up stores to cool the hive down.
